Proofing

Proofing is the last stage a manuscript goes through before it is sent out into the world. This step is to make sure there aren’t any missed errors, typos or formatting issues that may have incurred during the editing and redrafting stages.

A proofreader’s job is to check for any minor errors or inconsistencies with the manuscript before it goes to print or is converted into an ebook.

Areas of the manuscript that need a rewrite will not happen at this stage. This is one reason why having an editor is crucial to the writing and publishing process, especially before a manuscript goes to proofing.

At Pen to Print, your proofreader will be a different person from your editor and/or manuscript assessor. A fresh set of eyes can make a big difference in finding things that may have been overlooked. Think of this stage as your book baby’s graduation. Once complete, it can now be sent out into the world! Exciting!

For pricing information or questions about Proofing, please email Melissa at pentoprintau@gmail.com. Be sure to include your full name, the title of your manuscript, if it is fiction or non-fiction, and the word count.

Below is just a small example of the things we look at when proofreading a manuscript:

  • Checking grammar and punctuation

  • Consistency with page numbers

  • Consistency with formatting (eg. all heading fonts/sizes are the same throughout)

  • Correct spelling
