Your manuscript is ready to go and so are you for the next exciting stages. That’s wonderful! You like what you’ve read so far under the Manuscript Assessments, Editing and Proofreading sections of this website – and you want it all!
Step 1: Manuscript Assessment
At times, we become so engrossed with our writing, the story line and characters, it can be difficult to see any inconsistencies in the piece. Think of the manuscript assessor as your first test reader or beta reader. Their job is to highlight for you what works well and what areas may need tweaking.
You both have a common goal: for your piece to reach your target audience in a positive way, whether that’s a short story or novel with unforgettable characters, an outstanding storyline and narrative, or a nonfiction piece on a topic you’re passionate about and want to share with others.
The bottom line is, if you didn’t believe in what you're writing, you wouldn’t want to share it with others, so let’s join forces to make your publishing dream a reality!
Step 3: Proofing
The final step is proofreading. Now that you’ve completed the manuscript assessment and editing stages, your book baby is ready to be proofed.
Your proofreader will not line edit your manuscript. Their job is to read it over with fresh eyes to make sure there aren’t any typos, punctuation errors or duplicate words/sentences.
Once proofing is complete, you are now ready to take your manuscript to a traditional publisher, self-publish or submit to competitions!
Step 2: Editing
This step is crucial, as you do not want any typos or errors in your manuscript – especially once it’s out in the world. Like a manuscript assessor, an editor’s role is to work with you in producing the best quality possible for your manuscript.
If you skip the manuscript assessment stage, your editor will mention inconsistencies with your plot/s and narrative, and lack of character development, but they will not provide comprehensive feedback in as much detail as a manuscript assessor will. This could cause delays in the editing process, as your editor may take twice as long to complete your two rounds of editing with those additional markups and comments.
We offer two rounds of editing, with the first round giving you an opportunity to take onboard your editor’s suggestions and advice for the tweaks mentioned above, in order to make your manuscript the best it can possibly be. When your piece is returned to you after the first round of editing, this will be your last opportunity to make any changes to the manuscript and incorporate any suggestions made by your editor. Once you’re happy with this, we move on to the second round of editing.
This is the final editing stage, where your editor will fix any last-minute typos or errors that may have developed in between editing rounds. This is when your manuscript will be at a publishable standard and (almost) ready to go out into the world – exciting stuff!
