Editing
Editing is a crucial part of the writing and publishing process. A brilliant editor is like a writer’s Fairy Godmother: they help transform a manuscript into something that’s at a publishable standard, worthy of reading. Aside from a manuscript assessor, an editor is also the author’s next ‘test reader’. They provide unbiased advice and feedback, help clean up any errors, and highlight any ambiguous sections the author may have missed.
When it comes to submitting your work to competitions, publishers, or even if you choose the road of self-publishing, the writing should be outstanding and at its peak to gain positive attention. After all, you’re the author and it’s your name going on the cover!
There are variety of editing styles authors can pick from. These include basic editing, copyediting (also known as line editing), structural editing and developmental editing – with plenty more in between. At Pen to Print, we cover all of these categories.
Below is just a small example of the things we look at when editing manuscripts:
-
Grammar and punctuation
-
Style and voice
-
Word choice
-
Sentence structure and flow
-
Word length
-
Correct use of terms, jargon
-
Fact checking
-
Content permission/s
-
Development of plot and characters
-
Consistency
-
Use of narrative
Generally, different types of editing incur different fees. At Pen to Print, the fees are based on word count, allowing you to have the ultimate editing experience without blowing your budget.
We offer two rounds of editing, with the first round giving you an opportunity to take onboard your editor’s suggestions and advice for the tweaks mentioned above, in order to make your manuscript the best it can possibly be. When your piece is returned to you after the first round of editing, this will be your last opportunity to make any changes to the manuscript and incorporate any suggestions made by your editor. Once you’re happy with this, we move on to the second round of editing.
